Recently, while eating at a buffet restaurant, I was struck by the similarities between a buffet and life itself. At a buffet, you are presented with an almost unlimited variety of choices. In fact, there are usually far more food items than you could ever consume in ten meals. Life is the same way. You couldn’t experience all the things life has to offer in ten lifetimes.
In life, just as at a buffet, you have to make choices. You simply can’t have, do, see or be everything that is available to you. Your “plate” can only hold so much. So how do you decide what to put on your plate? Well, some people never seem to decide. We’ve all seen them wondering aimlessly around the buffet, going from station to station but never seeming to put anything on their plates. These people are like a mosquito in a nudist camp – they see lots of opportunity but can’t decide where to start.
The rest of us seem to make our choices in one of two ways. Some of us get in a line and just start selecting items until our plates are full. This is the easiest way to get through a buffet line or through the life for that matter. The only problem with this approach is that you wind up with some things on your plate that you don’t enjoy.
In my view, the better way to make your way through the buffet of life is to go from station to station only choosing those things that you really enjoy. Of course, this requires more work because seldom are all of your favorites at the same station. Moreover, this requires more patience because often, the lines are longer for the more popular items. Nevertheless, taking this little bit of extra effort makes the difference between being merely full and being fulfilled.
